Which Expansions Should You Get for Arkham Horror: The Card Game?

If you’re jumping into Arkham Horror: The Card Game, one of the biggest questions is always: Which campaign expansions should you get next? I’ve played through Carcosa, Forgotten Age, and The Scarlet Keys, so here’s my take on what to prioritize, whether you play solo or with two people.

The Must-Haves

The Dunwich Legacy

This is a classic for a reason. Dunwich is straightforward, accessible for new players, but still challenging and fun for experienced Arkham fans. If you’re just starting out, this is a great next step. Highly recommended.

The Path to Carcosa

Carcosa is hands-down one of the best cycles in the game. The story is phenomenal, the campaign is tense and unpredictable, and it just does a fantastic job of pulling you in. If you only get one expansion, make it this one.

The Forgotten Age

This one is infamous for its difficulty spike. It’s what originally got me hooked on Arkham, but fair warning: it’s a lot tougher than the earlier campaigns. Some players love the challenge, others find it a bit much. I personally enjoyed it, but it’s not for everyone.

Campaigns I’ve Played

The Circle Undone

This is the “witches” cycle, and I actually liked it more than most people. It has some unique mechanics (like the tarot cards) and an eerie vibe. I didn’t realize some folks didn’t love it, but I think it’s worth trying—especially if you enjoy a mysterious, supernatural theme.

The Dream-Eaters

Dream-Eaters splits into two separate mini-campaigns, so you’re basically getting two stories in one box. Some people aren’t fans of the split, but I think it’s a creative twist and keeps things fresh. It’s different, but that’s why I enjoy it.

The Innsmouth Conspiracy

Full disclosure: I own Innsmouth, but haven’t played it yet. It’s on my list, though, and I’ve heard great things. I’ll update you when I finally get to it!

Campaigns I’d Skip (or Wait On)

Edge of the Earth

Honestly, I wouldn’t prioritize this one. It just didn’t click with me, and I didn’t find the campaign as engaging as the older cycles.

The Scarlet Keys

Scarlet Keys is better than Edge of the Earth, but still not a top pick for me. I’d focus on the earlier expansions first before diving into this one.

Hemlock Vale & The Drowned City

I have played Hemlock Vale but not enough times to really judge it, and I’m still waiting to get my hands on The Drowned City. I’ve heard good things about Drowned City, though, so maybe keep an eye out if it goes on sale.

Personal Thoughts

Arkham Horror: The Card Game has gone through some changes, especially since designer MJ Newman left the project. For me, the earlier campaigns have more heart and just feel stronger overall. MJ’s design made the game what it is, and you can really feel the difference.

I play Arkham both solo and two-handed, depending on my mood—and honestly, sometimes I play just to see how badly the game can destroy me. That’s part of the fun!

Final Recommendations

If you’re new or building out your collection, start with Dunwich and Carcosa. After that, check out Circle Undone or Dream-Eaters if you want something different. I’d hold off on Edge of the Earth and Scarlet Keys unless you’re a completionist.
